Alan Hodges has wide experience in government as a senior member of the Australian Defence Force and in the Australian Public Service as Director General Emergency Management Australia. For the last six years he has undertaken a variety of consultancy projects, many involving risk management.
Consulting experience
Working individually or with colleagues, Alan's consulting tasks have included:
• Undertaking formal risk management studies for a number of organisations.
• Delivery of training, 2002-05, to Department of Foreign Affairs Trade through one-day training courses on Risk Management and Business Continuity, Policy Development, and Strategic Planning using adult-learning approaches with progressive hands-on involvement of participants.
• Mapping of government emergency management/counter terrorism committees and organisational responsibilities for Emergency Management Australia. This project involved identification of complex interconnected arrangements and responsibilities
• Defence Personnel Environment Scan 2020 - a major project covering external and internal Defence force personnel trends, in the near future and to the year 2020.
• Chairing for two years a national committee on Emergency Animal Disease Preparedness for Animal Health Australia. Chairing a steering committee for the GeoInsight Project - an AusIndustry-funded project to promote spatial data to the emergency management community. This project was a winner in the 2003 Safer Communities Awards.
• Developing strategic plans for various organisations.
Skills
Alan has well-developed skills that have been finely honed and are appropriate to the situation.
• He is a skilled communicator in formal environments (e.g. conference presentations, chairing meetings) and informal situations (e.g. staff interaction, stakeholder liaison, and radio and TV interviews).
• He has been sought out as an independent committee chair because of his ability to identify key issues, clearly identify solutions and foster cooperation to achieve acceptable outcomes.
• He has an understanding of, and is comfortable with, data and statistical information and analysis as a result of his engineering/economics/commerce education.
• Throughout his working life Alan has been recognised as an innovator who can motivate people to support him in implementing improvements to existing programs or in developing new approaches.
